A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE HARVARD UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR MICHAEL E. PORTER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING EFFORTS IN ASSISTING AND PROMOTING THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND COMPETITIVENESS OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Professor Michael E. Porter was graduated from Princeton University in 1969 with a degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and went on to receive his MBA and a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University; and

Whereas, he is the leading authority on competitive strategy and the competitiveness and economic development of nations, states, and regions. His ideas on strategy are the foundation for the required strategy course at the Harvard Business School and business schools around the world; and

Whereas, Professor Porter is the author of sixteen books and over one hundred articles. His book, Competitiveness Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, is in its fifty-eighth printing and has been translated into seventeen languages; and

Whereas, he has served as a counselor on competitive strategy to many leading United States and international companies, among them Credit Suisse First Boston, DuPont, Edward Jones, Navistar, Procter and Gamble, Royal Dutch Shell, Scotts Company, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. He also serves on the boards of directors of Parametric Technology Corporation, Thermo Electron Corporation, and Inforte Corporation and on several advisory boards of emerging companies; and

Whereas, Dr. Porter has served as an advisor to numerous foreign nations and groups of neighboring countries. He has led major studies of the economy for the governments of such countries as India, New Zealand, Canada, and Portugal, and advised national leaders in Ecuador, Nicaragua, Peru, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, among others; and

Whereas, Professor Porter also has assisted many state and local governments in enhancing competitiveness. His most recent work has been with South Carolina, and his advice and assistance to our State have been invaluable; and

Whereas, in December 2003, he presented South Carolina's business, academic, and political leaders with a cluster-based economic development plan designed to raise prosperity throughout the State. This strategy was the result of extensive analysis of over ten years of economic performance and composition data from a wide variety of academic, government, and private sources, as well as secondary research concerning the economic performance and implicit strategy of some of South Carolina's key neighbors and competitors. The resulting interest in, and enthusiasm for, the strategy led to the creation of The South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, an organization designed to implement a long-term strategy for the State; and

Whereas, through the efforts of Dr. Porter, South Carolina now has an economic vision to become more prosperous and increase the quality of life for all of its citizens. More important, through his efforts and the work of the Monitor Group, an internationally-acclaimed consulting firm co-founded by Professor Porter, South Carolina now has a roadmap to become more competitive in a global, knowledge-based economy and the tools to create hubs of innovation through clustering to increase the productivity of our industries; and

Whereas, with the creation of the South Carolina Council on Competitiveness, South Carolina now has the public/private collaborative vehicle to implement the recommendations of Professor Porter and to drive our state's efforts to be more prosperous; and

Whereas, the citizens of South Carolina are indebted to Professor Porter for all his work and efforts in developing and presenting a long-term strategy for economic development for our State. The fact that this work was done on a pro-bono basis by Professor Porter clearly demonstrates his personal interest due to family ties to our State and his fervent desire to see South Carolina improve the quality of life for all of its citizens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and recognize Harvard University Professor Michael E. Porter for his outstanding efforts in assisting and promoting the economic development and competitiveness of the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Porter.
