VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE THE TEMPLE ZION BAPTIST CHURCH OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY, AND COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
Whereas, the Temple Zion Baptist Church of Columbia celebrates its One Hundredth Anniversary this year. The church was founded in 1905, just forty years after the end of slavery; and
Whereas, church worship services were held in a small frame schoolhouse until the first sanctuary, located off Highway 215, was completed in 1916. This land was generously donated by Brother William Hatten; and
Whereas, Reverend T. Bailey was the first pastor of the church; and
Whereas, Reverend Nathan Taylor, who followed Reverend T. Bailey, served as pastor for five years and his dynamic leadership excited and inspired many in the community to join the church in worship and fellowship; and
Whereas, Reverend Alfred L. Peterson later assumed the pastorate and brought with him a vision to build a new church to accommodate the growing membership. This dream came to fruitition culminating in the present day church location; and
Whereas, Reverend B. Bailey eased the transition into this new location and also acquainted the church members with Vacation Bible School; and
Whereas, in 1971, the Lord led Reverend James T. Montgomery to the church. Reverend Montgomery was instrumental in elevating the church to "Station Church" status for the first time in its history; and
Whereas, in 1996, Reverend Montgomery formed a "Land Search Committee" and, with the blessing of God, was successful in obtaining 73.3 acres of land adjacent to the church for future development; and
Whereas, during Reverend Montgomery's tenure numerous programs were initiated, including The Youth Educational Services, J. T. Montgomery Singers, Men's Club, Men's Day Celebration, Miss Temple Zion Contest, Community Birthday Calendar Drive, Friendship Church, a newsletter, Family & Friends Day, a Deaconess Board, Pastor's Aid Club, Providence Home Project, Station Church, Women's Day, and the Male Chorus; and
Whereas, other accomplishments include renovation of the sanctuary, construction of the educational building, publication of a church yearbook, establishment of a day care center, the fellowship hall, installation of a new steeple, a canopy from the church building to the fellowship hall, and an on-site park; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives would like to commend Dr. James T. Montgomery, Pastor Emeritus, for his leadership and guidance, and the church, currently led by Interim Pastor Allene Griffin, for their continued dedication and commitment to the Lord; and
Whereas, the church has been a beacon of light for many people in the Columbia community and in the world beyond for the past hundred years and will no doubt continue to grow in God's grace for many years to come. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives recognize the Temple Zion Baptist Church of Columbia on the occasion of its historic one hundredth anniversary and commend the church for one hundred years of service to the community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Interim Pastor Allene Griffin, on behalf of the congregation of the Temple Zion Baptist Church of Columbia.
