A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MRS. CYNTHIA DETUELO, PRINCIPAL OF A. C. MOORE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL UPON HER RETIREMENT AND FOR HER OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AND EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO EXTEND THE VERY BEST WISHES TO HER IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mrs. Cynthia Detuelo, Principal of A. C. Moore Elementary School in Columbia, is retiring after a long and distinguished career in education; and

Whereas, Mrs. Detuelo received both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters degree in education from Clemson University; she has earned thirty hours above a masters degree at Furman University and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, she began her career as a special education teacher at Wren High School in Anderson in 1977 and subsequently served as the head of Wren's Guidance Department before becoming Assistant Principal at Hughes Middle School in Greenville; and

Whereas, after four years at Hughes, Mrs. Detuelo was tapped for principal of Blythe Academy of Languages, a magnet school for foreign languages in Greenville County; and

Whereas, in 1998 Mrs. Detuelo moved to Columbia with her family and took the helm at A. C. Moore Elementary School where she enthusiastically embraced A. C. Moore's motto "Where you can meet the world" and promoted its mission "To provide diverse physical, social, and intellectual experiences to prepare lifelong learners to embrace the challenges of the 21st century"; and

Whereas, Mrs. Detuelo has made substantial contributions in carrying out both the motto and mission of A. C. Moore through her exemplary dedication and commitment to furthering the educational opportunities for all A. C. Moore students, by being an exceptional, caring mentor to school faculty and staff, and by providing parents with helpful guidance and support; and

Whereas, in 2004 Mrs. Detuelo, as a member of the American International Education Foundation delegation to China, designed and taught a three week course to principals and members of the Ministry of Education outlining the American education system, taking a part of her world to China and returning to expand the world of A. C. Moore by sharing her many stories and extraordinary experiences; and

Whereas, Mrs. Detuelo has broadened the educational opportunities of A. C. Moore students in countless ways, including securing over $160,000 in grants to bolster an arts focused curriculum and working with community arts organizations to promote the arts; her commitment to this curriculum and her contributions to the arts has been recognized by the South Carolina Art Educators' Association, which selected Mrs. Detuelo as the South Carolina Outstanding Elementary Principal of 2000; and

Whereas, Mrs. Detuelo will surely carry her love of learning and enthusiasm for life with her as she embarks on a new chapter in her life, pursuing not only her doctoral studies but also relaxing with her husband, Leonard, and her children and grandchild at their lake home, reading, among other things, her favorite author, Shel Silverstein, and enjoying playing the piano; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such a distinguished educator, devoted wife and mother, and fine South Carolinian as Mrs. Cynthia Detuelo. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Mrs. Cynthia Detuelo, Principal of A. C. Moore Elementary School upon her retirement and for outstanding contributions and exemplary service to education in South Carolina and extend very best wishes to her in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Cynthia Detuelo.
