TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF DR. TIMOTHY PAUL BURRELL OF SPARTANBURG ON MAY 20, 2005, AND TO CONVEY THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened by the untimely death of Dr. Timothy Paul Burrell on May 20, 2005, and his wisdom, strength, and charm will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community; and

Whereas, a Spartanburg native, Mr. Burrell was the son of Dr. Lucia Skalski Burrell and the late Dr. Paul Digby Burrell, Jr.; and

Whereas, graduating from Wofford College in 1972, Dr. Burrell received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama, Birmingham and went on to join his parents in their optometric practice in 1976; and

Whereas, a devoted family man and husband, Dr. Burrell shared a loving marriage with his wife, Elizabeth Bean Burrell, and adored his two sons, Timothy John and Andrew Bean Burrell; and

Whereas, Dr. Burrell earned great distinction during his career as an optometrist, serving as president of both the Piedmont Optometric Society and the South Carolina Optometric Association, which awarded him with the Distinguished Service Award in 1998. He was inducted into the American Academy of Optometry in 1999; and

Whereas, at the time of his death, he was serving as the Vice President of the South Carolina Board of Examiners in Optometry and on the State Government Relations Committee for the American Optometric Association; and

Whereas, central to the Spartanburg community, Dr. Burrell was a member of the Spartanburg Lions Club and supported local groups including the Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund, furthering his love for the outdoors; and

Whereas, constantly giving of his time and energy to others, Dr. Burrell served as a youth basketball coach at First Presbyterian Church for twenty years and also was a board member of the Spartanburg YMCA; and

Whereas, Dr. Burrell is sorely missed, but will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends, and in the organizations he touched through his tireless leadership and support in Spartanburg. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their profound sorrow upon the death of Dr. Timothy Paul Burrell of Spartanburg on May 20, 2005, and convey the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Bean Burrell.
