TO RECOGNIZE BOYKIN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF MARLBORO COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC BICENTENNIAL AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR TWO HUNDRED YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AND CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP TO MARLBORO COUNTY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Boykin United Methodist Church celebrates its Bicentennial on October 2, 2005, having been officially established two hundred years ago, with its origins dating to church services held in the late 1700's in a grove under a brush arbor; and

Whereas, Boykin United Methodist Church was influenced by the spirit and preaching of Bishop Frances Asbury and other early circuit riders who preached in the brush arbor and held revival camp meetings; and

Whereas, the church took its name from the Boykin Family, one of whom was a local minister, and is the oldest Methodist organization in Marlboro County to remain in the same locality; and

Whereas, the Boykin United Methodist Church is a pillar of the Marlboro community, its presence enriching the lives of the residents in countless ways, including its annual barbecue, where family and friends come together in a spirit of friendship and community for an event that is one of the oldest continuous events in Marlboro County; and

Whereas, the church has also had outstanding children and youth programs that have provided a strong, loving, Christian foundation to thousands of children; additionally, the 4-H clubs sponsored by the church have provided great learning and leadership opportunities to scores of youth, many of whom have received awards and recognition in district, regional, state, and national competitions; and

Whereas, Boykin United Methodist Church has played a significant role in the lives of many prominent South Carolinians, who have included legislators representing Marlboro County in the South Carolina General Assembly and members who have served with honor and distinction in the War Between the States, World Wars I and II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War; and

Whereas, the Boykin congregation is exceptionally proud of its heritage and its teachings and influence, which have carried far beyond the borders of Marlboro County through members who have gone on to become ministers, missionaries, religious educators, a bishop, newspaper editors, lawyers, college professors, school teachers, nurses, and leaders in many other fields of service; and

Whereas, Boykin United Methodist Church has been a beacon of light, making a lasting and positive difference in the spiritual life of the community of Bennettsville, Marlboro County, and the State of South Carolina and will no doubt continue to grow in God's grace for many, many years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Boykin United Methodist Church of Marlboro County on the occasion of its historic bicentennial and to commend the church for two hundred years of dedicated service and Christian leadership to Marlboro County, and the State of South Carolina.
