A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LEROY N. CHAPMAN, JR., OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD OF JOURNALISM AND TO THE GREENVILLE COMMUNITY AND TO EXTEND TO HIM BEST WISHES IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, during his eleven-year career as a journalist, Leroy Chapman has worked tirelessly to fairly and accurately report South Carolina business, sports, and local government news, achieving extraordinary acclaim for his efforts; and

Whereas, the son of Leroy and Carolyn Chapman, Mr. Chapman is a devoted husband and family man, sharing a loving marriage with his wife, Dawn, and enjoying his two children, Isaiah and Isley; and

Whereas, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of South Carolina in 1994, Mr. Chapman first worked as a government and business reporter for the "Sumter Item" newspaper during his time as an undergraduate student, and then took his first official job as an Assistant Wire Desk Editor with "The State" newspaper; and

Whereas, earning the trust of his peers and superiors, and acquiring an outstanding reputation at "The State", Mr. Chapman went on to become a business reporter, covering consumer affairs, and a sports reporter, covering all Clemson University sports and the business and regulation concerning revenue-generating collegiate athletics; and

Whereas, in July of 1998, Mr. Chapman took a job with "The Greenville News" as a business reporter. In 1999, he became a member of the editorial board and in 2000, he was promoted to Associate Editorial Page Editor; and

Whereas, his promotion to the editorial board was truly momentous, as he was the first African-American in the newspaper's one hundred twenty-six year history to become a member of the opinion writing staff; and

Whereas, as Associate Editorial Page Editor, Mr. Chapman has authored an award-winning column that has earned state, regional, and national honors; and

Whereas, Mr. Chapman is also a seven-time award winner from the South Carolina Press Association, and has also received the 2002 Carmage Walls Prize for Commentary from the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and the 2001 First-Place Award for Commentary from the Gannett Newspapers Well Done Contest. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Leroy N. Chapman, Jr., of Greenville County for his outstanding contributions to the field of journalism and to the Greenville community and extend to him best wishes in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Leroy N. Chapman, Jr.
