A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MARY NEILL HAGOOD OF CHARLESTON ON BEING NAMED SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR ON JUNE 1, 2005, AND TO RECOGNIZE HER EXEMPLARY ACADEMIC RECORD AND COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK FOR THE BENEFIT OF HER LOCAL COMMUNITY AND THE STATE.

Whereas, it is appropriate to honor young people in our State who excel in athletics, academics, and community service work for the betterment of their local communities and the State as a whole; and

Whereas, Mary Neill Hagood, the daughter of James and Anne Marie Hagood and Jane Neill, all of Charleston, is one of these standout young people; and

Whereas, Mary Neill Hagood was named the Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year on June 1, 2005, at the conference's annual honors dinner; and

Whereas, a former standout on the Porter-Gaud Tennis Team, at Furman University Miss Hagood was twice named Southern Conference Player of the Year and led the Paladins to the 2004 and 2005 regular season and tournament titles. She also holds records at Furman for combined singles and doubles wins in a career and all-time doubles victories; and

Whereas, not only is this young woman a terrific tennis player, but she has achieved an excellent academic record as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Freshman National Honor Society and the recipient of the Furman Bisher Scholarship and the LIFE Scholarship;

Whereas, for her intellectual abilities, Miss Hagood was selected to the Southern Conference All-Academic Team, Academic All-District Team, and Academic Honor Roll; and

Whereas, in addition to her hours in the books and on the court, Miss Hagood still finds time to better her community by volunteering for Meals on Wheels and at the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and working with the Special Olympics; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure and admiration that the members of the House of Representatives extol such accomplished young South Carolinians as Mary Neill Hagood and expect great things from her in the future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Mary Neill Hagood of Charleston on being named Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year on June 1, 2005, and recognize her exemplary academic record and community service work for the benefit of her local community and the State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mary Neill Hagood of Charleston.
