A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE SOUTH CAROLINA YOUTH CORPS AND ITS DIRECTOR FOR THEIR EXTENSIVE WORK AND DEDICATION IN CONDUCTING ITS LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NINTH AND TENTH GRADE STUDENTS IN RICHLAND AND LEXINGTON COUNTIES AND TO WISH THE PROGRAM CONTINUED SUCCESS.

Whereas, South Carolina Youth Corps is a nine-month leadership training program for thirty-five ninth and tenth grade male and female students in Richland and Lexington Counties that began in August 2005; and

Whereas, South Carolina Youth Corps is based on the conviction that the young people of these counties must be educated and equipped for decision-making positions in the Midlands' public, private, and independent sectors, building a unified body of young people prepared for future involvement in community leadership; and

Whereas, the students in South Carolina Youth Corps attend a leadership weekend and experience modules in philanthropy and nonprofits, crimes, victims and justice, media and journalism, legislation and government, business and economics, investment and finance, career and higher education, and arts and culture in which they gain exposure and opportunity in being a leader in today's society; and

Whereas, each module is taught by top community leaders who possess extensive knowledge and expertise in their field; and

Whereas, each student participates in a module for approximately twelve hours per month; and

Whereas, students' experiences in South Carolina Youth Corps include starting their own businesses, working with community service projects, helping victims of crime, discovering careers of their interest, understanding the legislative process, interacting with the world of media and journalism, learning how to put their money to work, and exploring the arts and culture; and

Whereas, South Carolina Youth Corps provides students of Richland and Lexington Counties the experience and opportunity to become great leaders of South Carolina in the future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the South Carolina Youth Corps and its director for their extensive work and dedication in conducting its leadership training program for ninth and tenth grade students in Richland and Lexington Counties and wish the program continued success.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Director of the South Carolina Youth Corps.
