VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO COMMEND AND RECOGNIZE THE JEFFERSON DAVIS ACADEMY VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM FROM BARNWELL COUNTY FOR CAPTURING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND TO WISH THE TEAM AND ITS COACHES ALL THE BEST IN UPCOMING SEASONS.
Whereas, the Jefferson Davis Academy Varsity Football Team capped a truly extraordinary 2005 season by winning the SCISA Class A Championship title; and
Whereas, led by 12 seniors, the team of only nineteen young men faced, with great courage and tenacity, the obstacle of losing several all-star players from the 2004 season and was determined to earn success and recognition on their own and to continue the tradition of Jefferson Davis Academy football dominance; and
Whereas, that tradition certainly remains intact, as the Jefferson Davis Academy Raiders bowled over competitors during regular season play, shutting out six teams completely; and
Whereas, maintaining a near-perfect record, the Raiders outscored their opponents 724-113, and only fell to one opponent, St. John's Christian Academy. Though this game ended their incredible 18 game winning streak dating back to 2004, the Raiders bounced right back with two consecutive shutouts and went on to beat St. John's in the final championship game; and
Whereas, Head Coach Joey Lott and assistant coaches Curt Holcombe, Boots Camp, Kevin Webster, and Josh Fanning showed a remarkable amount of confidence in the players and their individual and collective abilities, continually pushing them to perform at the highest level possible; and
Whereas, Jefferson Davis Academy is no stranger to State Championship victories, as the 2005 title marks the sixth state title over the school's history, stretching across four decades of play; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives take great pride in commending the young men of the Jefferson Davis Academy football team for their tireless effort and tremendous persistence in an outstanding season and expect to hear of continued success in the future. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend and recognize the Jefferson Davis Academy Varsity Football Team from Barnwell County for capturing the South Carolina Independent Schools Association Class A State Championship and wish the team and its coaches all the best in upcoming seasons.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Jefferson Davis Academy football team and its coaches.
