TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR A DAUGHTER OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND HORRY COUNTY NATIVE NANCY O'DELL FOR HER REMARKABLE SUCCESS AND SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NATION AND STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AS AN AWARD-WINNING PROFESSIONAL JOURNALIST, AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED SUCCESS IN HER CAREER.
Whereas, Horry County native and Clemson University summa cum laude graduate, Nancy O'Dell began her broadcast career as a reporter and anchor at WPDE-TV in her hometown of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina before moving to Charleston to work as morning news anchor and crime reporter at WCBD-TV in Charleston; and
Whereas, while in Charleston, Ms. O'Dell's report on police re-writing tickets for driving under the influence to less serious charges earned her the Associated Press Best Report of the Year Award; and
Whereas, following her stint in Charleston, she served as co-anchor and investigative reporter for NBC's Miami station, WTVJ-TV, before joining Access Hollywood where she is currently the co-anchor; and
Whereas, Nancy O'Dell also currently contributes reports to NBC New's Today show and Dateline; and
Whereas, since joining Access Hollywood, Ms. O'Dell has earned the reputation as one of Hollywood's leading entertainment journalists. Beyond covering events such as The Oscars, The Emmys, The Grammys, and The Golden Globe Awards, she has hosted the national Golden Globes Arrivals Show for the past six years with Dick Clark; and
Whereas, in addition, she has been a co-host of NBC's network coverage of the Tournament of Roses Parade the past six years with Today weatherman Al Roker; and
Whereas, being an award-winning journalist, Ms. O'Dell has been honored with three Associated Press Awards, two Society of Professional Journalists Awards, and is a five-time Emmy Award nominee; and
Whereas, during the 2004 election season, she conducted an extended television interview with First Lady Laura Bush. Ms. O'Dell also interviewed Chris Heinz, stepson of Democratic challenger John Kerry, as well as First Daughters Barbara and Jenna Bush; and
Whereas, she has been a featured guest and host on a number of programs including ABC's The View, The Today Show, Larry King Live, Martha Stewart, Fox & Friends for Fox News Channel, The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch on CNBC, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and CBS's The Late, Late Show; and
Whereas, while earning her reputation as one of the preeminent entertainment broadcast journalists, Ms. O'Dell has additionally appeared in numerous television series and films; and
Whereas, despite her busy and glamorous career, she has devoted her time, energy, and finances to a number of different charitable organizations; and
Whereas, Ms. O'Dell was inducted into South Carolina's Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame in 1998 as the youngest member ever in recognition of her journalistic success, and Myrtle Beach/Sun Fun Festival Walk of Fame has a star bearing her name; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations so that they may pay tribute to this distinguished and accomplished South Carolinian. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor a daughter of South Carolina and Horry County native Nancy O'Dell for her remarkable success and significant contributions to the nation and State of South Carolina as an award-winning professional journalist, and wish her continued success in her chosen career.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Nancy O'Dell.
