A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING MICHAEL BLEWITT, A HORSETRAINER FROM HARTSVILLE BY WAY OF AUSTRALIA, AND HIS PARTNER, FRECKLED FOUR BITS, AN ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD HERETOFORE UNHERALDED MARE, ON THEIR STARTLING CAPTURE OF THE 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE SENIOR CUTTING CLASS AT THE AMERICAN PAINT HORSE ASSOCIATION SHOW IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS.

Whereas, Michael Blewitt, now a resident of the Hartsville area, landed in Texas and then Augusta, Georgia, after leaving New South Wales in Australia in 1979 at the age of nineteen to follow his dream of working with cutting horses; and

Whereas, he has spent twenty-five years training and showing cutting horses, who are judged based on their ability to enter a herd of cattle calmly, drive a single cow out the herd, and prevent it from achieving its natural desire to return to the herd, while being clocked for two and a half minutes; and

Whereas, when Blewitt and Freckled Four Bits teamed up for the mid-summer competition in Fort Worth, it was the gentle mare's first World Championship and she was even more of a longshot because she was trained east of the Mississippi; and

Whereas, her trainer, Blewitt, knew that what she lacked in talent, she made up for in heart; and he knew that he and Freckled Four Bits had made the necessary commitment to practice for this very technical sport; and

Whereas, even though they were paired against JR Red Diablo, one of cutting's top paint stallions of all time, the athletic mare was not intimidated: she worked two "tough cows" with no signs of quitting and surprised everyone at the world class event; and

Whereas, the gentle Freckled Four Bits, who had won less than $5,000 in her lifetime before her grand finale, is celebrating her retirement now; and

Whereas, her owner, Gray Segars of Hartsville, plans to breed her, and he and Blewitt anticipate that her Sea Biscuit-like story will only enhance the popularity of the sport of cutting in this State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Michael Blewitt, a horsetrainer from Hartsville by way of Australia, and his partner, Freckled Four Bits, an eleven-year-old heretofore unheralded mare, on their startling capture of the 2005 World Championship in the Senior Cutting Class at the American Paint Horse Association Show in Fort Worth, Texas.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Michael Blewitt.
