A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR THE LAKE ROBINSON RESCUE SQUAD OF HARTSVILLE ON THE OCCASION OF ITS FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND TO RECOGNIZE THE SQUAD'S HISTORY OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, it is a privilege for the South Carolina General Assembly to acknowledge the contributions of community volunteers who so selflessly give of their time, talents, and energy for the benefit of their fellow South Carolinians; and

Whereas, the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad of Hartsville is comprised of these truly dedicated volunteers who so willingly and with such skill accept the responsibility of providing the people in the Pine Ridge community located in the northwest corner of Darlington County along the borders of Lee and Chesterfield counties with often critical pre-hospital care; and

Whereas, the origin of the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad dates back to a lazy summer day in 1965 when the Pine Ridge Rural Fire Department received a call for help and responded to find one of their own trapped beneath a farm tractor. Back then, the area only had one ambulance, and it would be forty-five minutes before it could respond to this particular call so the injured fireman was placed in the back of a station wagon and transported to the hospital; and

Whereas, following this accident over forty years ago, it was determined that a critical need existed for a rescue squad and ambulance, and seven weeks after an organizational committee was formed, an ambulance was purchased for two hundred fifty dollars, training classes began, and the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad was born; and

Whereas, from these humble beginnings the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad has grown into a state-of-the-art rescue squad, the heart and soul of which is its seventy dedicated volunteers. These volunteers include three components of the squad: a Senior Squad, an Auxiliary, and a Junior Squad. Each has its own leadership, rules, and duties, but all come together and work as one cohesive team to achieve common goals. This family-oriented organization truly revolves around the family unit giving the entire family the opportunity to work together in service to their community; and

Whereas, the Lake Robinson Senior Rescue Squad currently has thirty active members, twenty of which are certified either as paramedics, emergency medical technicians, intermediate or basic emergency medical technicians; and the remaining members are first responders and drivers; and

Whereas, in the mid-sixties, the wives of squad members formed the Lake Robinson Rescuettes, now known as the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad Auxiliary which currently boasts over twenty men and women who provide support services to the squad; and

Whereas, in an effort to reach out to the young people of the community, forty years ago the squad created the Lake Robinson Junior Rescue Squad to give young boys and girls something constructive to fill their time. Many of the former and current members of the Junior Squad report that being a member of the Junior Squad changed their lives. The Junior Squad works diligently and with much enthusiasm every year on the popular Haunted House fundraiser; and

Whereas, in addition to the much anticipated Haunted House fundraiser, the list of other community outreach programs the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad is dedicated to includes hosting the annual Christmas parade together with the Fire Department and participating in the Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Kid's Fair which focuses on children's health and safety issues and allows children to tour an ambulance to alleviate their fears while educating their parents on important child safety issues; and

Whereas, the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad has continued to operate successfully over the last forty years due to three vital components: strong leadership, the truly dedicated men and women who have served as the volunteers over the past four decades, and the support of the community they serve; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause to pay tribute to the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad and take notice of its forty years of excellence in providing the citizens in the northwest section of Darlington County with ambulance and rescue services. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad of Hartsville on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary and recognize the squad's history of service to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad.
