A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE EXCEPTIONAL VOLUNTEERS, STAFF, AND ORGANIZERS OF THE SECOND HELPINGS NONPROFIT CORPORATION FOR THEIR EXTRAORDINARY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE LIVES OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS IN NEED AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON REACHING THE MILESTONE OF DELIVERING TEN MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD TO NEEDY AGENCIES.

Whereas, Second Helpings is a volunteer organization set out to distribute surplus food from supermarkets, restaurants, and caterers to nonprofit agencies that thereafter serve the food to South Carolina's hungry and disadvantaged; and

Whereas, following its inception on Hilton Head Island in January 1992, Second Helpings became a complex and highly organized operation, collecting food from more than fifty donors on a regular basis and over one hundred other donors throughout the year, and delivering this food to over seventy-eight agencies; and

Whereas, the Beaufort, Sun City, and Hilton Head Island trucks operate six days a week and are driven by volunteers who devote more than 11,000 hours of their time annually; and

Whereas, the types of food collected vary each day, and range from breads and cakes to deli items, milk, cheese, and fresh produce, all collected from area grocery stores. In addition, food from events held the previous day by caterers and restaurants is also collected and stored for future consumption; and

Whereas, a completely nonprofit organization, Second Helpings neither gives nor receives money from its donors. Volunteers take pride in knowing that they are making a difference in the lives of many, most of whom they may never actually meet face-to-face; and

Whereas, becoming a member agency of the Beaufort County United Way in 1993, Second Helpings receives continued funding from the organization each year and in turn provides food to many United Way Member agencies; and

Whereas, in 2005 alone, the volunteers of Second Helpings picked up over 100,000 pounds of salvaged food each month, helping feed over 10,000 children each week. Since its inception, the organization has rescued an amazing ten million pounds of food; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pride in lauding those involved with Second Helpings for their compassion, persistence, and follow-through in providing some of South Carolina's most desperate souls with a warm meal and a daily dose of hope for a brighter tomorrow. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize the exceptional volunteers, staff, and organizers of the Second Helpings Nonprofit Corporation for their extraordinary contributions to the lives of South Carolinians in need and congratulate them on reaching the milestone of delivering ten million pounds of food to needy agencies.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mike Trigg, President of Second Helpings.
