A HOUSE RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE TEACHERS, STAFF, AND STUDENTS OF BLYTHEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL IN RICHLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO ON RECEIVING THE 2006 CAROLINA FIRST PALMETTO'S FINEST SCHOOLS AWARD.

Whereas, each spring since 1978, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators has recognized a few schools that offer excellent instruction and outstanding leaders, augmented by strong family and community involvement and a supportive business community; and

Whereas, this prestigious award is given annually to two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school; and

Whereas, the teachers and staff of Blythewood Middle School, together with the students and the best group of supportive parents a school could wish for, have worked side by side to make Blythewood Middle School the stellar example that all other schools in South Carolina would do well to emulate; and

Whereas, the selection process for the Palmetto's Finest Award includes a comprehensive review of a school's program, focusing on the impact a school is making on the lives of students and the community; and

Whereas, over the years the Blythewood Middle School has been the recipient of many honors and accolades; and

Whereas, some of these include the 2004 Award of Excellence, the Excellence in Teaching Science Standards Award for 2003-04 from the South Carolina Mining Association, the 2003 Innovative Technology Program Award, and the 2004 School of Promise Award, a national flagship award presented to schools as result of the school's pledge to provide each child five essential resources; and

Whereas, Blythewood Middle School also was the recipient of the Palmetto Silver Award for 2004 created by the Education Accountability Act recognizing schools that attain high levels of absolute performance and high rates of improvement on the state report card; and

Whereas, the school is proud to boast an outstanding principal, Nancy Gregory, who was recognized as the 2005 State Middle Level Principal of the Year, and participated in the 2005 National Distinguished Principal Program, which honors exemplary elementary and middle school principals who set the pace, character, and quality of the education children receive during their early years; and

Whereas, Blythewood Middle School also was recognized by the Intel and Scholastic Schools of Distinction as a semifinalist in Intel's Awards of Distinction in Technology in 2005 for demonstrating excellence in implementing innovative programs and showcasing the effective use of technology and the development of excellent classroom teachers; and

Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause to admire the honorable work of all the dedicated persons associated with Blythewood Middle School who make this school such a shining and fine model of excellence in education. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the teachers, staff, and students of Blythewood Middle School in Richland School District Two on receiving the 2006 Carolina First Palmetto's Finest Schools Award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Blythewood Middle School Principal, Nancy Gregory.
