A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ERIKA GRACE POWELL OF PICKENS COUNTY FOR HER SCHOLASTIC HONORS AND HER MANY OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND TO CONGRATULATE HER ON BEING CROWNED MISS SOUTH CAROLINA 2005.

Whereas, Erika Grace Powell is from Easley, South Carolina and is the oldest daughter of Keith and Deborah Powell. She has a younger sister and a younger brother; and

Whereas, she is a junior vocal performance major at Furman University and plans on furthering her education with a Master's degree in vocal performance at a music conservatory; and

Whereas, Erika has been awarded a number of scholastic honors including the Furman University Vocal Performance Scholarship, SC Academic LIFE Scholarship, Furman University Chamber Choir Scholarship, and Furman University Chapel Choir Scholarship; and

Whereas, she was the National Association of Teachers of Singing State and Regional Winner in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004, and she won the Most Effective Mock Trial Attorney Award in 2003. Erika was a member of the National Forensics League from 2002 to 2003, participated in the Region and All-State Band from 1999 to 2003, and finished in the top ten at the State National League Competition in 2003; and

Whereas, Erika has been strongly committed to helping educate teen pregnancy prevention through mentoring. She has volunteered over one thousand hours for The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, traveled to Washington, D.C. on behalf of this national campaign, and has raised over $3,000 for the prevention of teen pregnancy; and

Whereas, she has been featured on NBC affiliate, WYFF, prior to Katie Couric's special "The 411: Teens and Sex" and has been recognized as a keynote speaker for numerous civic, church, and school-related functions; and

Whereas, Erika has played the lead role in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi Opera and has been featured as a soloist at Furman University Opera Gala; and

Whereas, she has received the Miss Golden Corner Talent Award and Miss South Carolina Overall Talent Award. As, Miss South Carolina, Erika Powell, was named to the top ten in the Miss America Competition. She was a talent preliminary winner and won the Bernie Wayne Performing Arts Award and Scholarship during the Miss America Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such a talented young woman and an outstanding ambassador of South Carolina and wish her every success in all her future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Erika Grace Powell of Pickens County for her scholastic honors and her many other accomplishments and congratulate her on being crowned Miss South Carolina 2005.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Erika Grace Powell.
