TO HONOR AND COMMEND WOODLAND HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY FOR BEING RECOGNIZED BY THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA EDUCATION OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE AS A SOUTH CAROLINA PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMITTED TO "CLOSING THE GAP" AMONG STUDENTS OF DIFFERING ECONOMIC, RACIAL, AND ETHNIC GROUPS.

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pride in recognizing South Carolina public schools that promote academic excellence in all students and work to alleviate social and economic boundaries that often prevent students from achieving to their highest potential; and

Whereas, Woodland Heights Elementary School in Spartanburg School District Six certainly stands as one such school, as both individual and collective performance records from students indicate that parents, teachers, and administrators work together to facilitate education and learning among all groups of students; and

Whereas, on April 10, 2006, the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee will recognize one hundred thirty-eight elementary and middle schools from the eight hundred sixty-three schools statewide for "closing the gap" among students with different backgrounds in achieving overall academic success. Woodland Heights Elementary School is one school to be recognized; and

Whereas, the Education Oversight Committee selected the schools using three criteria, including: a school having at least thirty students from economic, racial, or ethnic backgrounds that have historically underachieved in South Carolina; the performance from the identified group having met or exceeded the seventy-fifth percentile of performance of students statewide in either English, language arts, or mathematics; and the school having met the requirements for adequate yearly progress (AYP) for all students and for the identified group; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives commends those involved with the education and training of the students of Woodland Heights Elementary School for their exceptional efforts in assuring that all students have the tools necessary to achieve both in and out of the classroom. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and commend Woodland Heights Elementary School for being recognized by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee as a South Carolina public school committed to "closing the gap" among students of different economic, racial, and ethnic groups.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be sent to the principal of Woodland Heights Elementary School.
