A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF MARVIN SCARBOROUGH OF SUMTER COUNTY ON MARCH 23, 2006, AND TO CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Marvin Scarborough of Sumter County on March 23, 2006; and

Whereas, the son of Rosa Lee Scarborough, Marvin Scarborough was born in Sumter, South Carolina, on July 20, 1955, and grew up on the southside of Sumter; and

Whereas, Mr. Scarborough decided early in life that he wanted to become a funeral professional, and after graduating from Sumter High School in 1974, he attended Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Services in Atlanta, Georgia, where in 1976 he made his dream a reality; and

Whereas, in 1977 he satisfied the requirements of the State Funeral Service Board and was licensed as a Funeral Director and Embalmer. Over the course of his thirty-one year career he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a manager-mortician; and

Whereas, in 2005 Mr. Scarborough achieved his ultimate goal in becoming president of Scarborough Funeral Services. In less than a year, his contribution to that business and the profession was recognized and applauded by the entire community; and

Whereas, while Mr. Scarborough had many interests, his faith, nurtured by his grandmother, the late Mrs. Lillie S. Williams, and his church were the most important. He attended Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher and in numerous other capacities during his lifetime; and

Whereas, a civic activist, Mr. Scarborough served as president of the Sumter branch of the NAACP in 2001, and as first vice president of the South Carolina State Conference of Branches in 2005. As president of the Sumter branch, Mr. Scarborough led the organization to a new era of advocacy and reconciliation, with his efforts frequently being recognized and honored by the state conference; and

Whereas, the recipient of numerous awards for his community involvement, Mr. Scarborough was honored as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1979, and won the Martin Luther King Civil Rights Award in 2002 and the Citizen of the Year Award from the Gamma Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 2003; and

Whereas, Mr. Scarborough is survived by his daughter, Kristee Deschamps; his mother, Rosa Lee Scarborough; five siblings; and numerous aunts, uncles, and other relatives; and

Whereas, Mr. Scarborough will be missed, but always will be remembered as a fine South Carolinian who possessed great strength and character. Now, therefore,

Be is resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Marvin Scarborough of Sumter County on March 23, 2006, and convey their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Rosa Lee Scarborough.
