A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR SARAH BRIGGS JENKINS OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, FOR A LIFETIME OF OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HER FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND COMMUNITY, TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON HER DEATH AND TO OFFER HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY, AND TO HONOR THE GATHERING OF THE BRIGGS-SALMOND FAMILY AT ITS 22ND ANNUAL FAMILY REUNION ON MAY 26-28, 2006, IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the seventh of ten children, Mrs. Sarah Briggs Jenkins was born to the late Johnny Briggs and Callie Salmond Briggs Alexander on February 14, 1920; and

Whereas, reared and educated in Camden, South Carolina, Mrs. Jenkins was baptized as a young girl at Sanders Creek Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jenkins moved to Paterson, New Jersey, at the age of eighteen where she resided for over fifty years; and

Whereas, a health care provider who worked tirelessly for the good of those in need, Mrs. Jenkins was employed by several members of the medical community, including Dr. Joelson, Dr. Hyman, and the Singer family; and

Whereas, always willing to transport members of her church to doctor's appointments, Mrs. Jenkins loyally spent time visiting nursing homes and the sick and shut in; and

Whereas, a dedicated, loyal, and active member of the New A.M.E. Zion Church, she served as President of the Stewardess Board, as a Sunday school teacher, on the Christian Board of Education, and on the Chaplain Woman's Day Committee, among many other commitments; and

Whereas, an avid community volunteer, Mrs. Jenkins served as den mother for the Boy Scouts, was on the National Council for Negro Women, was on the Neighborhood Advisory Board, and served as a class leader for many years; and

Whereas, a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Jenkins shared a loving marriage with the late David Jenkins. The couple was blessed with two children, Francis David Jenkins and Joel Irving Jenkins, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mrs. Jenkins dedicated her life to helping others, and will always be remembered for her grace, wisdom, and kind heart; and

Whereas, an active community volunteer and beloved matriarch, Mrs. Jenkins will be greatly missed at the Briggs-Salmond Family Reunion on May 26-28, 2006, in Charleston, South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Sarah Briggs Jenkins of Paterson, New Jersey, for a lifetime of outstanding contributions to her family, friends, and community, express their profound sorrow upon her death and offer her family and many friends the deepest sympathy, and honor the gathering of the Briggs-Salmond family at its 22nd annual family reunion on May 26-28, 2006, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be provided to her sons and to sister, Claretta Briggs Fletcher, of Camden.
