A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE RICHLAND NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL'S MODEL UNITED NATIONS TEAM ON ITS SEVENTEENTH CONSECUTIVE INTERNATIONAL FIRST PLACE AWARD AT THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE IN NEW YORK CITY ON MARCH 21-26, 2006, AND TO HONOR THESE DISTINGUISHED STUDENTS AND THEIR ADVISOR, LYNN WASHINGTON, FOR THIS UNPRECEDENTED ACCOMPLISHMENT.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are immensely pleased to once again have the opportunity to recognize Richland Northeast High School for its superior performance and unprecedented accomplishment in winning the National Model United Nations International First Place Award of Distinction for the seventeenth consecutive year; and

Whereas, this remarkable group of students participated in the Model United Nations Conference in New York City March 21-26, 2006, and where more than 2,700 students participated from throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Europe, and Latin America; and

Whereas, the Richland Northeast delegation represented Iran in this year's mock deliberations and also won the Award of Distinction for its research paper evaluating Iran's policies and presenting solutions in a variety of areas; and

Whereas, the students participate on the team on a strictly voluntary basis and each student's place on the team, which he or she competes for, is based on his or her particular talent and expertise; the Model United Nations emphasizes consensus-building and critical-thinking skills, and the students put in countless hours of study and preparation; and

Whereas, this year's distinguished team consisted of: Aileen Alon, Marques Ardoin, Francine Berger, Hank Blume, Chelsey Boggs, Leacy Burk, Hallie Carde, Caroline Corley, Sona Coshal, Emily Dean, Julian Green, Miles Martin, Matt Meadows, Kate Nielson, Elizabeth Prinz, Emily Robertson, Molly Sanders, Nikki Sareen, Matt Scully, John Sumpter, Hayley Swinson, Danny Weinberg, Lad Williamson, Lin Lin Zhao; and

Whereas, Lynn Washington, the team's sponsor-advisor is a truly remarkable and extraordinary individual whose dedication, tireless efforts, and enthusiasm for guiding the students through this demanding, but greatly rewarding, experience is unparalleled; and

Whereas, in addition to the Awards of Distinction for both performance and research, two Richland Northeast High School 2003 graduates, Foard Copeland and Ryan Gassaway, were selected by the International Model United Nations Board of Directors to serve next year in the prestigious positions of Secretary General and Director General, respectively, of the Model United Nations; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause in their deliberations to recognize such an outstanding group of young people who have brought enormous pride to Richland Northeast High School and to this great State through their extraordinary performance at the National Model United Nations Conference. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Richland Northeast High School's Model United Nations Team on its seventeenth consecutive International First Place Award of Distinction at the National High School Model United Nations Conference in New York City March 21-26, 2006, and honor these distinguished students and their advisor, Lynn Washington, for this unprecedented accomplishment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Richland Northeast High School Model United Nations Team and Lynn Washington, the team's sponsor-advisor.
