A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND MR. AND MRS. CLYDE SPIRES OF PELION AS THEY CELEBRATE SIXTY YEARS OF LOVING MARRIAGE ON JUNE 1, 2006, AND TO WISH THEM MANY MORE AFFECTIONATE AND HAPPY YEARS TOGETHER.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to recognize Mary Catherine and Clyde Spires on the occasion of their sixtieth wedding anniversary; and

Whereas, the marital union of Mary Catherine and Clyde Spires began June 1, 1946; and

Whereas, Mary Catherine is the daughter of Lola May and Robert Jacobs and the granddaughter of Minnie Ada Lowman, whose family started the Lowman Home, and Henry D. Shumpert, who was elected to the House of Representatives; and

Whereas, the son of Granvillle and Thelma Chaney Spires, Clyde is the grandson of Henry K. Spires and the great-grandson of John Calhoun Spires; and

Whereas, Mr. and Mrs. Spires have been leaders in the growth of the Pelion community as they were instrumental in the founding of Pelion Community Club and the establishing of the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star at Pelion; and

Whereas, with generous hearts, the Spires were among those who gave the land that is now the Pelion Town Hall, and their families helped build and begin Pelion Methodist Church, King Grove Baptist Church, and Pelion Baptist Church; and

Whereas, as a veteran of World War II, Clyde Spires was a member of the Third Division where he saw his company completely replaced three times. He received an Honorable Discharge listing his major campaigns including North Africa, the landing at Anjio Beach Head, the Komar Pocket, the Normandy Landing, the Siegfried Line, and Dead Horse Valley; and

Whereas, Mrs. and Mrs. Spires were farmers with Mary Catherine working in agribusiness, raising poultry and cattle, and Clyde focusing on cotton, corn, and soybeans, and when they were first married the couple ran a grocery store; and

Whereas, Mr. Spires is retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation and Mrs. Spires demonstrated her creative interests as a seamstress, dressmaker, and designer; and

Whereas, the happy couple has one daughter, Carolyn, and son-in-law, John Bocock, who produced three grandchildren for the Spires, Jeri Jeffcoat and her husband Joe, Jane McGill and her husband Jerry, and John Branch Bocock. They also have one great-grandson, Jacob McGill; and

Whereas, this close-knit family is proud to celebrate the love of their matriarch and patriarch; and

Whereas, it is with great admiration that the members of the House of Representatives extol such wonderful role models as Mary Catherine and Clyde Spires as they commemorate sixty years of marital happiness and look forward to celebrating many more with them in the years to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Spires of Pelion as they celebrate sixty years of loving marriage on June 1, 2006, and wish them many more affectionate and happy years together.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Spires of Pelion.
