A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF BISHOP JAMES C. WEST, SR., OF DORCHESTER COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bishop James C. West, Sr., on Sunday, May 28, 2006; and

Whereas, Bishop West was the Bishop Ordinary of Diocese of the Southeast and a retired educator; and

Whereas, this wonderful man of God was loved and respected by all those who were privileged to know him; and

Whereas, Bishop West also was known for his love and dedication to his family; and

Whereas, he was the loving husband of Mrs. Miriam B. West of Summerville, South Carolina and caring father of Mr. James C. "Jay" West, Jr., of Charlotte, North Carolina and Ms. Candace L. West of North Charleston, South Carolina; and

Whereas, James was the proud son of Mrs. Louise J. West of St. Stephen, South Carolina and brother of Reverend Dr. George L. West of Anderson, South Carolina, Mrs. Flora W. Gethers of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Reverend Anna Rebecca West of Washington, DC, and Ms. Sarah West of Gilford, Connecticut; and

Whereas, to devote the better part of his life to his church denomination, and its members is one of life's highest callings; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives extend their sympathy to the family and many friends of Bishop James C. West as they reflect on the life of this outstanding citizen of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Bishop James C. West, Sr., of Dorchester County and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Miriam B. West.
