A SENATE RESOLUTION

WELCOMING GAMMA PHI DELTA SORORITY TO SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS SOUTH ATLANTIC REGIONAL CONFERENCE AND THANKING THE MEMBERS FOR THEIR SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. was founded in February of 1943 at Lewis Business College in Detroit, Michigan by Elizabeth Garner and Violet T. Lewis; and

Whereas, the mission of Gamma Phi Delta is "to improve the economic, social and political status of all women; to encourage our members to further their education/training and maintain a progressive interest in the values of humanity; to promote refinement and culture; to establish and maintain a better relationship among women of all races and creeds and to be of greater service to our community, our country and to each other"; and

Whereas, the sorority provides opportunities for women to work and serve on the local, regional and national levels, developing productive relationships and fostering positive results; and

Whereas, Gamma Phi Delta Sorority contributes annually to approved charitable organizations that are involved in serving humanity and whose objectives reflect their mission. Their service to the community includes volunteer work in hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, tutoring, literacy, and programs for the elderly; and

Whereas, in April of 2000, Barbara Maxton founded the Beta Mu Chapter of Gamma Phi Delta in Spartanburg County and the present membership of this chapter is eighteen women; and

Whereas, the Beta Mu Chapter of Gamma Phi Delta is hosting the South Atlantic Regional Conference from March 17 through March 20 at the Marriott Renaissance Hotel in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That, by this resolution, the members of the South Carolina Senate welcome Gamma Phi Delta sorority to Spartanburg, South Carolina, on the occasion of its South Atlantic Regional Conference and thank the members for their service to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Doris Fowler, President of the Beta Mu Chapter of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc.
