A SENATE RESOLUTION

COMMENDING AND HONORING MRS. CORINNE B. BURTON ON THE OCCASION OF HER SEVENTY YEARS AS A LOYAL AND OUTSTANDING MEMBER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, A PUBLIC SERVICE ORGANIZATION, AND ACKNOWLEDGING THAT SHE IS A CHARTER MEMBER OF ALPHA XI CHAPTER.

Whereas, Mrs. Corinne B. Burton is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia, South Carolina, where she was an honor graduate; and

Whereas, Mrs. Burton graduated from South Carolina State College with a degree in English and French; and

Whereas, she received her Masters in Education Degree from New York University and did postgraduate work at Atlanta University; and

Whereas, Mrs. Burton began her teaching career at the Felton Laboratory School on the campus of South Carolina State College and spent the remainder of her profession teaching in the public schools of Richland County where she taught English and social studies at Waverly Elementary School and W. A. Perry Junior High School; and

Whereas, she is a life member of St. Luke Episcopal Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and is a member of the Episcopal Church Women, the Ladies Guild, and Craft Guild; and

Whereas, Mrs. Burton's professional affiliations include membership in the National Educational Association, the Richland County and South Carolina Education Associations, and the National Association of Curriculum and Instruction; and

Whereas, Mrs. Burton has been active in the political and social life of her community, Burton Heights (named in honor of her late husband), now known as Burton Heights-Standish Acres neighborhood; and

Whereas, Mrs. Burton is a past president of the Columbia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and in addition to her public school and community activities, Mrs. Burton and her late husband, William H. Burton, reared two sons, William, II and David. She is the proud grandmother of two, Jared and Brittany, and the great-grandmother of two. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and honor Mrs. Corinne B. Burton on the occasion of her seventy years as a loyal and outstanding member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a public service organization, and acknowledge that she is a charter member of Alpha Xi Chapter.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Corinne B. Burton.
