A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF DOCTOR EUGENE H. KAPLAN UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF NEUROPSYCHIATRY AND BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, AND EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM ON HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Eugene Kaplan, M.D., is retiring from his position as a distinguished professor at the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine; and

Whereas, Doctor Kaplan attended the College of the City of New York from 1941-42 and, after serving his country in the Army during World War II, went on to graduate from University of Michigan in 1947; and

Whereas, in 1951, he earned his Medical Degree from New York University College of Medicine and later graduated from New York Psychoanalytic Institute as a Qualified Adolescent Analyst; and

Whereas, over his career, Doctor Kaplan has had numerous academic appointments including Assistant Clinical Professor of Child Psychiatry at Albert Einstein College, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Downstate Medical Center, SUNY, and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University; and

Whereas, from 1985-2004, he was Professor in the Division of Psychoanalysis, Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and was the Distinguished Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science from 2004-2005 before becoming Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Medicine in 2005; and

Whereas, Doctor Kaplan received his Diplomate from the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1952, his license to practice in New York State, his Diplomate from the American Board of Psychiatry in 1959, his certificate in Psychoanalysis in 1963, and his license to practice in South Carolina in 1985; and

Whereas, he has received numerous hospital and clinic appointments, including staff psychiatrist at Long Island Jewish Hospital, assistant visiting psychiatrist at the Kings County Municipal Hospital Center, associate attending at the North Shore University Hospital, and Chief of Psychoanalytic Services at William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute; and

Whereas, Doctor Kaplan has served as the President of the Long Island Psychoanalytic Society, the President of the Nassau Psychiatric Society, the President of the South Carolina Psychoanalytic Study Group, and Fellow on the Board of Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association; and

Whereas, he wrote the book "Drugs Don't Take People, People Take Drugs" and has also written numerous book chapters, countless articles and multiple reviews. Now, Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate wish to honor and recognize the accomplishments of Doctor Eugene H. Kaplan upon his retirement as Distinguished Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and extend best wishes to him on his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Kaplan.
