A SENATE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE DARING ACTS OF BRAVERY OF DERRICK GIBSON IN RESCUING A MOTHER AND HER TODDLER FROM A BURNING CAR IN THE WAKE OF A FATAL COLLISION BETWEEN THEIR CAR AND TWO TRACTOR-TRAILERS ON INTERSTATE 20.

Whereas, Derrick Gibson was on the scene at a fatal accident on Interstate 20 only because he was running late for work; and

Whereas, his fortuitous timing and his total disregard for his own safety resulted in a heroic rescue of a mother and her three-year-old toddler from their already flaming SUV; and

Whereas, after putting out the mother's fiery hair, he kicked out a window and clambered into the burning car to unlatch the toddler's carseat and handed her through the opening to other passersby; and

Whereas, only his split-second reactions and his courage in the face of personal danger allowed Derrick Gibson to join the ranks of ordinary people who perform extraordinary feats; and

Whereas, Derrick Gibson epitomizes all that is special about South Carolina's citizens and their unique willingness to lend a helping hand, whatever the circumstances. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize the daring acts of bravery of Derrick Gibson in rescuing a mother and her toddler from a burning car in the wake of a fatal collision between their car and two tractor-trailers on Interstate 20.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Derrick Gibson.
