A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON LEARNING OF THE DEATH OF JAMES MIDDLETON II OF CHARLESTON AND TO EXTEND HEARTFELT SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, Mr. James Middleton II of Charleston was born April 3, 1939, and was the son of the late James Middleton, Sr. and Florence Greene Middleton; and

Whereas, a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Charleston, he continued his education at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and pursued other graduate studies; and

Whereas, Mr. Middleton wisely decided to devote his considerable talents to the glory of God at the young age of 14 when he began in the music ministry at Greater Beard Chapel AME Church under Reverend Carole B. Priester. He went on to serve the Greater Beard Chapel AME Church for over forty years; and

Whereas, known as the "James Cleveland of the South" and later as the "Maestro", he served in numerous musical roles such as director for the local Miss Black Teen America Pageants, guest organist at many local churches' annual revivals, accompanist for several debutante balls and regional and national conferences of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, was the founder of the "Just Music" combo band providing entertainment for weddings, receptions, and other special occasions, and was the Director of Music for the Edisto District of the AME Church for many years; and

Whereas, he dedicated his life to helping people and throughout his lifetime served as Executive Director of the Charleston County Economic Opportunity Commission, as a counselor and supervisor at youth homes in both New York and North Carolina, program director for Charleston County Community Action Agency Head Start Program, and as supervisor of the Charleston County Census Project; and

Whereas, he also supported his local community through his membership in the Masons, George Washington Carver Consistory, Mu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and the NAACP; and

Whereas, Mr. Middleton was not just an active member of his church and community but was also a devoted family man. He was the beloved husband of the former Vertelle Deloris, his high school sweetheart, and together they raised three children: Jamela M. Wintons, Dr. Kylon Jerome Middleton, and Dr. Gloria K. Holmes; and

Whereas, he was also proud to boast seven grandchildren: Jasmine K. Wintons, Jada K. Wintons, Kylon Joshua Middleton, Chondraah Holmes, Corey Holmes, Jawanzaa Holmes, and HaLanier Holmes; and

Whereas, it is with honor that the members of the South Carolina Senate pause to reflect on the rich life of James Middleton II and to acknowledge the many contributions he made throughout his lifetime to his local community and the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon learning of the death of James Middleton II of Charleston and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mr. James Middleton II.
