TO RECOGNIZE THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FEDERAL INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM AND THE VITAL IMPACT IT HAS ON OUR STATE, ECONOMY, SECURITY, AND THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF OUR CITIZENS.
Whereas, on June 29, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act which launched the greatest public works project in our history, the United States Interstate Highway System, and the Highway Revenue Act which created a Highway Trust Fund; and
Whereas, in 2006, the nation's web of superhighways spans nearly forty-seven thousand miles, crisscrossing our country so that all Americans are within a few days drive of practically any location, making neighbors of us all; and
Whereas, the interstate highways are the arteries through which flow the lifeblood of our economy. They serve our national defense, as they were originally intended; and of all roads, they are the safest and most efficient; and
Whereas, South Carolina is fortunate to have five major interstate highways, which link our State with all parts of the nation. A sixth interstate, I-73, is presently under development. Nearly all South Carolinians live within thirty miles of one or more interstate highways, and every South Carolinian benefits directly from the advantages they afford; and
Whereas, South Carolinians have many reasons to celebrate the anniversary of the interstate highway system. Travel and tourism is our state's number one industry. Our state's economy is strong and getting stronger. Industries from all over the world are looking to our State as a possible location. Without the eight hundred forty-four miles of interstate highways which serve our global economy well and which carry twenty-seven percent of all traffic through our State, our economic prospects would be far less promising. Because of our investment in these superior roads, we are free to move, to grow, and to prosper. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby recognize the fiftieth anniversary of the federal interstate highway system and the vital impact it has had on our State, our economy, our security, and the quality of life of our citizens.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
