A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE PENDLETON DISTRICT COMMISSION FOR FORTY YEARS OF PROMOTING HISTORY AND TOURISM IN ANDERSON, OCONEE, AND PICKENS COUNTIES AND FOR HELPING TO MAKE TOURISM THE NUMBER ONE INDUSTRY IN THE STATE.

Whereas, the Pendleton District Commission was established in 1966 by the South Carolina Legislature as the first tourism region in the State, making it the oldest of the State's eleven tourism regions; and

Whereas, as a trailblazer in tourism marketing and promotion, the Pendleton District Commission's mission continues to be to promote tourism and protect the heritage of the historic Pendleton District, growing Heritage and Recreational Tourism in the region; and

Whereas, the Visitor's Center operated by the commission is located in the heart of the historic town of Pendleton and helps direct visitors to sites and attractions throughout Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties; and

Whereas, the Visitor's Center has won numerous State and regional awards for its Historic Pendleton Spring Jubilee Festival, attracting over thirty thousand visitors each year; and

Whereas, housed in an 1850's general store known as Hunter's Store, the Visitor's Center also is home to the local history archives and research library, which attracts researchers from across the country, and the Pendleton District Agricultural Museum, which exhibits a unique collection of pre-1925 farm equipment indigenous to the region's farmers; and

Whereas, in honor of our State's rich agricultural history, the Pendleton District Commission administers the South Carolina Century Farms Program, which recognizes farms that have been in the same family for one hundred years or more. There are currently over three hundred forty properties that have been designated as Century Farms since 1974; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to recognize the Pendleton District Commission on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary and commend the commission for the many opportunities it has brought to this scenic and largely rural region of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Pendleton District Commission for forty years of promoting history and tourism in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties and for helping to make tourism the number one industry in the State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Pendleton District Commission.
