A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING DR. MENDEL STEWART ON RECEIVING THE ORDER OF THE PALMETTO, AWARDED TO HIM ON MAY 18, 2006, BY GOVERNOR MARK SANFORD, HONORING HIS LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO THE EDUCATION OF THE STUDENTS IN PICKENS COUNTY, AND WISHING HIM WELL UPON HIS RETIREMENT AS SUPERINTENDENT OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PICKENS COUNTY.

Whereas, Dr. Mendel Stewart will receive the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Mark Sanford on May 18, 2006, for a lifetime committed to education, a commendable work ethic, a history of public service, and notable impact in promoting economic development in South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. Stewart will be retiring as Superintendent of the School District of Pickens County this year, a position he has held since 2000; and

Whereas, after graduating with a Bachelor's of Arts in 1967, he received his Master of Education degree in 1972, and became an Education Specialist in Educational Administration in 1975, all from Clemson University, and then received his Doctor of Education in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1984; and

Whereas, Dr. Stewart has worked in the School District of Pickens County for nearly forty years. He has served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, Principal, Director, and Assistant Superintendent. Not only did he serve as Superintendent of the School District of Pickens County, he also was an Adjunct Professor at both Clemson University and South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, Dr. Stewart has given much of his time to education, he was a member of the State Board of Education, and the At-Risk Student Committee for the Education and Economic Development Act. He currently serves as a member of the South Carolina High School Redesign Commission, a member of the South Carolina Association of School Superintendents, a member of the American Association for Community College Trustees, and Chairman of the South Carolina Association of Technical College Commissioners; and

Whereas, among his many professional achievements, Dr. Stewart was instrumental in beginning the Tech Prep and School to Work programs in the late 1980s, and was actively involved in forming the "Gateway to College" program at Tri-County Technical College; and

Whereas, Dr. Stewart is equally dedicated to the Pickens community, serving on the Pickens County Council, the Pickens County United Way Board, President of Pickens County Forest Landowners Association, member of the Alliance Pickens Economic Development Board, and member, Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Pickens First Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Dr. Stewart is married to Mrs. Janice M. Stewart, is the father of four, grandfather of eleven, served in the United States Army, and the South Carolina National Guard. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Mendel Stewart on receiving the Order of the Palmetto, honor his lifetime commitment to the education of Pickens County's youth, and wish him well upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Mendel Stewart.
