A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE BOBBY MATTHEWS OF SUMTER FOR HIS FIFTY YEARS OF EDUCATING, COACHING, MENTORING, AND LEADING STUDENTS AS CHAIRMAN OF THE SUMTER SCHOOL DISTRICT 17 BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND TO WISH HIM GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, over the past fifty years, Bobby Matthews has guided the lives of children as a teacher and coach, an assistant principal, a principal, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Sumter School District 17; and

Whereas, after an illustrious high school career playing baseball, basketball, and football, Bobby Matthews passed on a professional baseball contract to attend Presbyterian College, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in history; and

Whereas, Mr. Matthews began his career in 1954, coaching basketball and football at Winyah High School in Georgetown, and he moved to Sumter five years later to teach social studies at Alice Drive Middle School and coach football and track in the afternoons; and

Whereas, in 1960, Mr. Matthews became a teacher and coach at Edmunds High School, where he led the baseball team to the school's only baseball state championship; and

Whereas, Mr. Matthews also served as the assistant principal of Edmunds High School and the principal of Central Elementary School until 1970, when he became the principal of the newly formed Sumter High School, which was the product of the integration of Edmunds and Lincoln High Schools; and

Whereas, Mr. Matthews remained an inspiring leader as principal of Sumter High until 1985. Since then, he has served on the Board of Trustees of Sumter School District 17, from which he now retires as chairman; and

Whereas, it is with great admiration that the members of the General Assembly honor Bobby Matthews for touching and bettering the lives of so many young people in Sumter County and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Bobby Matthews of Sumter for his fifty years of educating, coaching, mentoring, and leading students as Chairman of the Sumter School District 17 Board of Trustees, and wish him good health and happiness upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bobby Matthews of Sumter.
