A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND BEAUFORT COUNTY AND THE BEAUFORT COUNTY COUNCIL FOR BECOMING THE FIRST LOCAL JURISDICTION TO PARTNER WITH THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY, IN PURCHASING A RESTRICTIVE EASEMENT TO PREVENT ENCROACHMENT UPON THE MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IN BEAUFORT AND ENCOURAGE OTHER LOCAL GOVERNMENTS ACROSS SOUTH CAROLINA AND THE NATION TO FOLLOW THIS PATRIOTIC EXAMPLE.

Whereas, Beaufort County has initiated proactive efforts in the interest of national defense and the economic well being of its citizenry by acquiring a sixty-nine acre tract of land adjacent to the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, pursuant to the FY03 Defense Authorization Act, Title 10 U.S.C. Section 2684(a).

Whereas, the procured land will be preserved and act as a buffer from the encroachment of development upon the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort; and

Whereas, preservation of this valuable parcel, despite its potential for profitable residential or commercial development, will protect the future viability of the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort; and

Whereas, the Beaufort County Council, working in concert with military officials and the non-profit conservation organization, The Trust for Public Land, gave the acquisition high priority among several other worthy opportunities for valuable land purchases; and

Whereas, the people of Beaufort County have time and again demonstrated their commitment, high regard, and affection for their local military installations and the marines and sailors stationed there; and

Whereas, the purchase and preservation of this property by the Beaufort County Council, through its partnership with the Department of the Navy, has reaffirmed its support for the Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, along with other local military facilities; and

Whereas, the Beaufort County Council has underscored the special alliance of its citizenry to local military men and women. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Beaufort County and the Beaufort County Council for becoming the first local jurisdiction to partner with the United States of America, through the Department of the Navy, in purchasing a restrictive easement to prevent encroachment upon the Marine Corp's air station in Beaufort, and encourage other local governments across South Carolina and the Nation to follow this patriotic example.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Beaufort County Council.
