A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. JAMES T. MCLAWHORN, JR., FOR HIS COURAGEOUS LEADERSHIP AND COMPASSIONATE SERVICE FOR THE PAST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AS THE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE COLUMBIA URBAN LEAGUE, AND WISH HIM CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, James T. McLawhorn, Jr., is a visionary, innovator, and problem solving leader; and

Whereas, this year, we will join him in celebrating twenty-five years of service as president and chief executive officer of the Columbia Urban League; and

Whereas, Mr. McLawhorn is the past president of the National Urban League's Southern Regional Council of Executives; and

Whereas, for his commitment to youth development, the National Urban League recently named him President of the Decade; and

Whereas, in 1985, Mr. McLawhorn founded the National Black Family Summit, a premier action forum on family issues. In 1999, this event brought more than 1,300 people together to develop strategies for family empowerment; and

Whereas, he was one of the chief planners in 2000 of the King Day at the Dome: A Rally for Unity. This event was one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in the history of South Carolina and brought more than 60,000 people to Columbia to protest the flying of the Confederate flag atop the South Carolina Statehouse dome; and

Whereas, under Mr. McLawhorn's leadership, the Columbia Urban League publishes the State of Black South Carolina: An Action Agenda for the Future, a widely respected report on the most pressing issues affecting the status of African-Americans in South Carolina. The publication is penned by area professionals, used as reference material in area libraries, and teaching material in schools and universities throughout South Carolina; and

Whereas, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, Mr. McLawhorn was awarded the prestigious Order of the Palmetto, the State's highest award given to a civilian. In addition he is the recipient of the South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Works 1999 Service Award for his commitment to community service; and

Whereas, Mr. McLawhorn is recognized as an expert leader in the area of race and community relations and has been awarded the National Urban League's Whitney M. Young, Jr., Race Relations Award for these efforts; and

Whereas, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in political science from North Carolina A & T University, a Master's degree in Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami; and

Whereas, he is married to the former Barbara Campbell, and together they are the proud parents of three children, Karla, James III, and Mark; and

Whereas, he and his family are devoted members of St. John's Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to honor Mr. McLawhorn for his twenty-five years of dedicated service as president and chief executive officer of the Columbia Urban League. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Mr. James T. McLawhorn, Jr., for his courageous leadership and compassionate service for the past twenty-five years as the president and chief executive officer of the Columbia Urban League, and wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. James T. McLawhorn, Jr.
