COMMENDING TAIWAN ON ITS FULL-FLEDGED DEMOCRACY, ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROMOTE WORLD PEACE, FREEDOM, AND HUMAN RIGHTS, AND SUPPORTING ITS EFFORTS TO JOIN THE UNITED NATIONS, WHO, AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.
Whereas, Taiwan and the United States of America are friends and allies of long standing, both dearly cherishing the commonly shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights; and
Whereas, Taiwan is the world's 17th largest economy, the United States' 8th largest trading partner, as well as the 5th largest market for the United States' agricultural products; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina and Taiwan have enjoyed long and mutually beneficial sister-state relations since 1981; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina looks forward to enhancing trade and investment opportunities with Taiwan; and
Whereas, the re-election of Mr. Chen Shui-bian as President in the Presidential election of March 2, 2004, proved Taiwan a mature democracy; and that its people can freely express their will and determine their own future free from coercion, such as hostile missile deployment from Mainland China as well as China's drafting of the "Anti-Separation Law," an act which would raise tensions across the Taiwan Straits; and
Whereas, Taiwan as a willing and contributing member of the world community, is one of the major donors of the funds and materials for the tsunami disaster of December 26, 2004, in South Asia; and
Whereas, the twenty-three million people in Taiwan are not represented in the United Nations, WHO, and other important international organizations, and the human rights of the Taiwanese people as citizens of the world are therefore seriously hindered. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the efforts of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to join the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and other international organizations are commended and supported.
Be it further resolved that the Clerk of the House of Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to Mr. R. C. Wu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta.
