A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE STUDENTS, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, AND STAFF OF NORTHSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL IN WEST COLUMBIA ON THEIR RECEIVING THE 2005 PALMETTO'S FINEST AWARD AND ACKNOWLEDGING THEIR STRIVING TO REACH AND MAXIMIZE THE FULL MEASURE OF THEIR TALENTS AND ABILITIES.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representaives are pleased to learn that Northside Middle School in West Columbia recently received the 2005 Carolina First Palmetto's Finest School Award; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and Greenville-based Carolina First Bank annually recognize two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school with educators, students, parents, and supporters who are responsible for "innovative, effective educational programs"; and

Whereas, Northside Middle School is extraordinary in achieving such programming by offering a stimulating curriculum covering core subjects to arts enrichment and providing a myriad of opportunities for involvement in community service projects, music concerts, mentoring partnerships, and after-school enrichment; and

Whereas, the judges who recommend Palmetto's Finest winners take into account objective factors such as test scores and college admission offers but also consider other, sometimes less recognizable, factors such as volunteerism; and

Whereas, each applicant school first completes a seventeen-page written statement detailing virtually every aspect of the school's operation, including staffing, curriculum, programs, resources, and community collaboration; and

Whereas, the applicants are then visited by a team of members from the South Carolina Association of School Administrators' Palmetto's Finest Awards Committee; and

Whereas, after the sixteen finalists are selected each school undergoes a second visit from a different team of committee members, after which a selection meeting is held to determine the four winners; and

Whereas, Northside's candidacy was bolstered by a very impressive curriculum that, most notably, addresses individual academic needs. One area evidencing this extra effort, and which goes above and beyond the generally expected, is the availability of a Spanish language interpreter on staff; and

Whereas, training at Northside Middle School obviously expands the educational horizons of its students in an innovative and effective manner serving as a shining example for schools throughout the State. The members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are proud to honor their effort and success. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the students, faculty, administration, and staff of Northside Middle School in West Columbia on their receiving the 2005 Palmetto's Finest Award and acknowledge their striving to reach and maximize the full measure of their talents and abilities.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Northside Middle School.
