A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF COLUMBIA ON CELEBRATING ITS EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARY ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2004, AND TO RECOGNIZE THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF COLUMBIA FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, Katharine Heath Perry founded the Junior League of Columbia in 1924 with the mission to improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers and promote voluntarism; and

Whereas, with over one thousand three hundred members, the Junior League of Columbia remains the leading volunteer organization for women who want to change the face of our community; and

Whereas, these leaders take time out of their personal lives to make Columbia a better place to live and raise a family because they believe that our rent on earth is voluntarism; and

Whereas, the impact of eighty years of Junior League voluntarism efforts can be felt throughout the Columbia community. Over the years, the Junior League of Columbia founded the Alliance for South Carolina's Children (known today as Voices for South Carolina's Children), Communities in Schools, Congaree Land Trust, Sistercare, and Smart Matters, real programs to impact real needs in our community; and

Whereas, the Junior League hosted a week entitled, "Building Brighter Tomorrows", on September 12-18, 2004, in which they responded to the critical needs in our community by hosting events that focused on five areas of critical need to Columbia residents; and

Whereas, the League partnered with the United Way and more than twenty nonprofit organizations to draw more than one thousand volunteers to Building Brighter Tomorrows events at local community centers; and

Whereas, the mission of the Junior League of Columbia is to strengthen the health and well-being of the children and families of the Midlands. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Junior League of Columbia on celebrating its Eightieth Anniversary on September 23, 2004, and recognize the Junior League of Columbia for its contributions to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Junior League of Columbia.
