A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. TED YOUNG OF SUMTER COUNTY FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL COMMITMENT TO HIS CAREER AND COMMUNITY AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING NAMED THE 2005 HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR BY THE SUMTER YMCA.

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pride in recognizing those South Carolinians who give tirelessly of themselves in contributing to the lives of those who need it most; and

Whereas, Dr. Ted Young is certainly one such individual, as his life stands as a testament to all the good one man can do when he puts his heart and soul into his work; and

Whereas, growing up in Florence County, Dr. Young is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; and

Whereas, Dr. Young joined the Air Force after medical school and served two years of active duty before beginning his pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital in Philadelphia; and

Whereas, in 1956, Dr. Young and Dr. Charles Propst opened their own practice in Sumter, now known as Sumter Pediatrics; and

Whereas, though his career demands constant attention and effort, Dr. Young remains committed to community activism, and has been a member of the Wilson Hall School Board, a board member of the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly, and was named Sumter Rotary Club's Rotarian of the Year in 2002; and

Whereas, possessing a strong faith, Dr. Young is a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he has served as a deacon, an elder, and a clerk of session; and

Whereas, Dr. Young remains humble despite his many honors which include "Outstanding Contribution Toward Improving Access to Care in South Carolina for Mothers and Children" from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, the 1991 Chapter President Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the 1999 William Weston Distinguished Service Award from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine for Pediatrics, and the 2003 Career Achievement Award from the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives lauds Dr. Young for his enduring love and commitment to the Sumter community and for his extraordinary contributions to the lives he has touched over the course of his career. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Ted Young of Sumter County for his exceptional commitment to his career and community and congratulate him on being named the 2005 Humanitarian of the Year by the Sumter YMCA.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Ted Young.
