TO RAISE AWARENESS OF THE HIGH INCIDENCE OF INFANT MORTALITY AND THE OTHER GRAVE DANGERS OF POOR PRENATAL CARE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO DESIGNATE MARCH 25, 2006 AS LOW COUNTRY HEALTHY START INFANT MORTALITY AWARENESS DAY.
Whereas, the incidence of infant mortality in South Carolina families continues to weigh heavily upon the minds and hearts of the House of Representatives; and
Whereas, the 2005 S.C. Kids Count report indicated that the professional and personal futures of many South Carolina youth are in serious jeopardy due to complications suffered due to poor prenatal care; and
Whereas, Low Country Healthy Start is a community-based program designed to reduce infant mortality and improve pregnancy outcomes in Allendale, Bamberg, Hampton, and Orangeburg Counties; and
Whereas, the program has seen progress in helping mothers receive the education and help they need, and continues to reach out to at-risk populations through prenatal resource coordinators, prenatal outreach workers, and social workers; and
Whereas, on Saturday, March 25, 2006 walkers will assemble at the W.J. Clark Middle School track in Orangeburg for the Low Country Healthy Start's First Annual Infant Mortality Awareness Walk in support and furtherance of the program's efforts; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives recognizes Low Country Healthy Start's objectives as worthy ones and encourages the organization to continue the fight against infant mortality in the promise of a better tomorrow for South Carolina as a whole. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, raise awareness of the high incidence of infant mortality and other grave dangers of poor prenatal care in South Carolina and designate March 25, 2006 as Low Country Healthy Start Infant Mortality Day.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Virginia Berry White, Program Director of Low Country Healthy Start.
