A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE MATTHEW SHULER OF ST. GEORGE, A JUNIOR AT PINEWOOD PREP AND SON OF DR. AND MRS. GLENN SHULER, FOR WINNING THE 2006 SOUTH CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHESS ASSOCIATION TOURNAMENT RECENTLY HELD IN HILTON HEAD.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that on March 4, 2006, Matthew Shuler, a junior at Pinewood Prep and son of Dr. and Mrs. Glenn Shuler of St. George, won the 2006 South Carolina High School Chess Championship at the South Carolina Chess Association annual tournament; and

Whereas, the tournament is sponsored annually by the South Carolina Chess Association and was held this year in Hilton Head. Sixty high school students from across the State participated in the competition; and

Whereas, in the tournament, Matt had no trouble with his first four opponents as he displayed a solid opening technique and superior tactical play. In the final game, neither player could gain an advantage and it ended in a draw. Based on an elaborate tiebreaker system, Matt won first place; and

Whereas, Matt learned how to play chess at the age of ten, when his father taught him the moves of the game. He was homeschooled at the time, so it was easy to incorporate chess into his curriculum. As a sixth grader, he began to participate in tournaments, but it was as an eighth grader that he really started to make huge leaps in his chess abilities; and

Whereas, the hard work paid off, and he was able to win the state middle school championship in 2003. In 2004, he won the state high school championship for the first time as a ninth grader. Also in 2004, Matt was invited by the University of South Carolina's chess club to participate in a simultaneous exhibition against chess author and International Master, Dr. Danny Kopec; and

Whereas, although recently he has not played in many tournaments because of his participation on the Pinewoood baseball team and in various other activities, his winning the 2006 State High School Chess Championship proves he still has all of his wonderful analytical abilities, and he offers to all young South Carolinians interested in chess the following advice:

"Be sure that you have fun playing chess. A lot of people put pressure on themselves to win. But you've got to remember that chess is a game - a game to be enjoyed"; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to recognize and congratulate this truly outstanding young man on the occasion of winning this important championship. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize and congratulate Matthew Shuler of St. George, a junior at Pinewood Prep and son of Dr. and Mrs. Glenn Shuler, for winning the 2006 South Carolina High School Chess Championship at the South Carolina Chess Association tournament recently held in Hilton Head.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Matthew Shuler.
