A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR MS. IJUANA GADSDEN OF CHARLESTON COUNTY FOR HER DEDICATION TO THE STUDENTS OF THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON AND TO RECOGNIZE THE MANY AND VARIED CONTRIBUTIONS THIS OUTSTANDING SOUTH CAROLINIAN MAKES DAILY TO THE COLLEGE COMMUNITY AND TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, it is with great pride that the South Carolina General Assembly commends those citizens who tirelessly give of their time, talent, and energy to benefit South Carolina's youth; and

Whereas, Ijuana Gadsden, office manager for the College of Charleston's Division of Student Affairs, is certainly one such person, as her life stands as a testament of the difference one person can make in the lives of so many; and

Whereas, a member of the college's staff since November 2000, Ms. Gadsden has served in numerous capacities. She is often the first one to step in to help students when they face personal crises, and her warm smile and compassionate heart ease their worries and comfort their hearts; and

Whereas, utilizing communication tools to coordinate assistance to needy students, Ms. Gadsden set up a network of faculty, staff, and students who can be contacted when others need help. Extraordinarily helpful in crisis situations, this network provides families with places to stay in emergency situations and coordinates the donation of necessary food and supplies to students and families that need it most; and

Whereas, wholeheartedly believing in random acts of kindness, Ijuana Gadsden has been known to pick up strangers' tabs in restaurants, buy groceries for someone less fortunate, or even open her home to those in need; and

Whereas, a devoted woman of faith, she is one of three licensed ministers at her church and also serves as the assistant superintendent of Sunday school, as an adult Sunday school teacher, and as a youth minister; and

Whereas, Ms. Gadsden is also the proud and loving mother of daughter Raven who attends the Charleston County School of the Arts; and

Whereas, in 2004 Ms. Gadsden was recognized in Charleston's Post and Courier as an "unsung hero" in the Charleston community and was also honored that year with the Citizen of the Month Award by the Charleston County Council; and

Whereas, Ijuana Gadsden's tenacity and kind spirit undoubtedly make the College of Charleston community a better place, and the college, surrounding Charleston community, and the State are fortunate to call Ms. Gadsden their own. The South Carolina General Assembly is honored to pause to recognize this most outstanding South Carolinian. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Ms. Ijuana Gadsden of Charleston County for her dedication to the students of the College of Charleston and to recognize the many and varied contributions this outstanding South Carolinian makes daily to the college community and to the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Ijuana Gadsden of Charleston County.
