A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO WELCOME THE UNITED STATES YOUTH GAMES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TO COLUMBIA JULY 18-22, 2006, AND CONGRATULATE THIS OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION ON ITS 40th ANNIVERSARY OF PROVIDING RECREATIONAL, CULTURAL, AND SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES TO THE URBAN YOUTH OF OVER 30 CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to welcome the United States Youth Games to Columbia where they will hold their National Championship July 18-22, 2006; and

Whereas, the United States Youth Games, celebrating their 40th anniversary, were founded in 1966 by Mayor John Lindsey of New York to foster cooperation and camaraderie among urban youth throughout the United States; and

Whereas, these youth games, which have spread to over thirty cities, provide opportunities to young people ages nine through fifteen for recreational and personal growth through competition in sports and also offer exceptional enrichment experiences and promote better social and cultural understanding; and

Whereas, over 1,000 athletes, coaches, parents, and guests are anticipated in Columbia for these young athletes to compete in girls and boys basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming, bowling, soccer, flag football, golf, track and field, double dutch, and chess and in an academic bowl; and

Whereas, Columbia and the State of South Carolina are pleased to host this outstanding national youth sporting event, and the members of the General Assembly wish the United States Youth Games a successful and enriching experience during their National Championship games. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, welcome the United States Youth Games National Championship to Columbia July 18-22, 2006, and congratulate this outstanding organization on its 40th anniversary of providing recreational, cultural, and social opportunities to the urban youth of over 30 cities across the country.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Oliver Washington, National Coordinator, United States Youth Games.
