A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE LEE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM OF LEE COUNTY ON ITS MOST IMPRESSIVE STATE AA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND TO HONOR ITS PLAYERS AND THEIR COACH, LAVERNE KNOX, ON ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY SEASON.

Whereas, the Lee Central Stallions capped off its outstanding season by becoming 2006 State AA Basketball Champions; and

Whereas, this remarkable season was the result of hard work, dedication, and determination as well as great coaching and good sportsmanship; and

Whereas, unselfish teamwork helped lead the Stallions to a 61-52 upset win and redemption of last year's heartbreaking 66-57 title game loss over the defending state champions, Broome High School Centurions, who were led by AA Player of the Year Junior Salters and had previously compiled a twenty-four game winning streak coming into the title game; and

Whereas, the Stallions set the tone early, playing the entire game with complete focus and professionalism, while withholding any emotion until the final buzzer went off; and

Whereas, Lee Central's march toward its goal of a state championship started with a sprint, as Michael Holmes scored the first six points of the game for the Stallions, which helped give them a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter; and

Whereas, the Stallions tough defense frustrated the opposition all night, resulting in Broome shooting only seventeen of fifty-seven shots from the field for a measly twenty-nine percent; and

Whereas, Lee Central fought off a furious second half Broome comeback to score five straight unanswered points to start the fourth quarter and increase the lead to 48-41. Broome never threatened again, and the Stallions made seven of eleven free throws in the final two minutes and thirty seconds of the game to secure the victory; and

Whereas, the Stallions finished the season with a final record of 25-4. The team was led in scoring by Rico Anderson and Phillip Holmes with thirteen points each, while Marquis Jackson contributed eleven, and Michael Holmes added ten to the cause. Xavier Harry scored eight points, and Lashon Johnson finished with five; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives take great pride in recognizing the young men of the Lee Central High School Boys Basketball Team on an outstanding achievement and in honoring them as tremendous model student-athletes who demonstrate the possibilities of believing in one another. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives congratulate the Lee Central High School Boys Basketball Team of Lee County on its most impressive State AA Basketball Championship Title, and honor its players and their coach, LaVerne Knox, on another extraordinary season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the players, coaches, and school officials of the Lee Central Boys Basketball Team.
