A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND EXCEPTIONAL COMMUNITY LEADER, JOHN S. POOLE OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE SPARTANBURG AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY GROWTH EXPERIENCED DURING HIS TERM OF SERVICE.

Whereas, the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce membership has grown by thirty percent under the leadership of John S. Poole as President and CEO; and

Whereas, the Chamber's annual Red Zone Campaigns in 2003, 2004, and 2005 broke all sales records and currently are approaching the half- million-dollar mark; and

Whereas, the Chamber achieved the prestigious five-star rating when reaccredited by the United States Chamber of Commerce in 2005, a distinction held by only three percent of Chambers of Commerce nationally; and

Whereas, the Chamber has increased both the number of events for members and participation at those events, especially the Business After Hours, Business Showcase, Commerce Connection, Ambassadors Club, CEO Socials, golf outings, and business training opportunities; and

Whereas, the Spartanburg Area Chamber has strengthened its Public Policy Division by partnering with the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce to hire a full time lobbyist to promote the Upstate's business agenda and has taken active positions on such key business legislation as tort reform, worker's compensation reform, and small business incentives. It has also been an Upstate leader in transportation and air quality improvements; and

Whereas, the Chamber has proven a leader in putting modern technology to work through a monthly e-mail newsletter called Focus and a newly designed website, which includes a calendar for community events; and

Whereas, under the strong leadership of John Poole, the Chamber has demonstrated a renewed devotion to diversity by adding a Diversity Vice Chair board position and special events such as the Women-in-Business Luncheon; and

Whereas, the Chamber serves the Spartanburg community with city planning initiatives such as 'Share the Vision' and leadership development programs such as Leadership Spartanburg, Junior Leadership Spartanburg, and two new Spartanburg associations: the Spartanburg Downtown Association and the Spartanburg Young Professionals. It also promotes advocacy and communications for our schools, colleges, and university, especially noting the annual Education Issues Forum and Teacher of the Year Recognition Program; and

Whereas, the Chamber took forty-four community leaders on an inter-community visit to Fort Worth, Texas, in 2005, the first trip of this kind for the community in five years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend exceptional community leader, John S. Poole of Spartanburg County, for his outstanding service as President and CEO of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce and express appreciation for the extraordinary growth experienced during his term of service.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to John S. Poole.
