A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR RUDOLPH "RUDY" SMITH OF JASPER COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COMMUNITY AND STATE AS JASPER COUNTY DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS AND TO WISH HIM WELL UPON HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves in benefit of their individual communities and of the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Rudolph "Rudy" Smith was born and raised in Jasper County and has spent the better part of his adult life giving back to the community of his youth; and

Whereas, he has been a loving husband to his wife, Betty Smith, for forty-two years. Together, they are the proud parents of three sons, Rudy, Lawrence, and Mark, and are blessed with six wonderful grandchildren; and

Whereas, a Columbia College graduate in business administration, he served honorably over a twenty year career in the United States Army, bravely serving during the Vietnam War and retiring as a Sergeant Major; and

Whereas, Rudy Smith returned to Jasper County with his family in 1978, and thereafter began his own successful business, "Rudy's Auto Sales"; and

Whereas, in March 1986, he became the Jasper County Director of Public Works. Under his leadership, the Jasper County Solid Waste System was transformed and equipped with new recycling centers, and roads that had never before been paved became smooth and new; and

Whereas, working tirelessly to promote Jasper County port development, he devoted many weekends and early mornings to explaining the proposed Jasper terminal to politicians and dignitaries; and

Whereas, during his tenure he also applied for and received numerous grants to improve boat landings at the Bolin Hall, Buxberry, and Millstone Landings; and

Whereas, perhaps Rudy Smith's proudest accomplishment is the camaraderie that his leadership fostered among his fellow Jasper County employees, and the strong working relationships they all share will last long past his retirement; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to recognize this outstanding South Carolinian for all that he has done in benefit of Jasper County upon the occasion of his retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Rudolph "Rudy" Smith of Jasper County for his outstanding contributions to his community and State as Jasper County Director of Public Works and wish him well upon his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Rudy Smith.
