A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS ON THE OCCASION OF ITS 2006 LEGISLATIVE GALA AND TO RECOGNIZE THEM FOR THE OUTSTANDING WORK THEY ACCOMPLISH IN BENEFIT OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, formally organized in 1975, the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus centers itself on the motto, "Like limbs we reach toward the sun, but feed from a common root"; and

Whereas, consisting of thirteen black House of Representatives members in its inaugural year, the group currently boasts a membership of thirty-three African American members of the General Assembly, including eight Senators and twenty-five Representatives; and

Whereas, Senator John W. Matthews and Senator Kay Patterson both served as members of the original caucus and still serve in the General Assembly today; and

Whereas, Representative David W. Mack III, currently leads the group as Chairperson; and

Whereas, dedicated to bettering the lives of all South Carolinians, the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus supports legislation designed to uplift the less fortunate and works to provide employment opportunities for citizens in rural areas; and

Whereas, its members remain committed to improving the quality of education for all South Carolina youth; and

Whereas, the South Carolina 2006 Black Caucus Annual Gala will be held on June 17, 2006, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus is to be commended for its understanding that there is power in diversity, and for its acknowledgement that the blending of races, cultures, and different socio-economic groups is the single most important factor in making America the greatest nation on earth. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the members of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus on the occasion of its 2006 Legislative Gala and recognize them for the outstanding work they accomplish in benefit of the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Representative David W. Mack III.
