TO DIRECT THE OFFICE ON AGING, OFFICE OF THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, TO PROVIDE INFORMATION TO MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE WHITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON AGING AND THE STATE CONFERENCE BOTH TO BE HELD IN 2005.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Whereas, President Bush and the Administration on Aging have called for a White House Conference on Aging to occur October 23-26, 2005, in Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina and the Lieutenant Governor's Office on Aging are convening a State Conference on Aging on April 25-27, 2005, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and
Whereas, these conferences are convened only once each decade to develop future direction in aging public policy; and
Whereas, the convening of these conferences is an historical occasion that will play a significant role in the development of aging policy and programs over the next decade; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognize and vigorously support these upcoming conferences. Now, therefore,
SECTION 1. (A) In support of the State Conference on Aging to be held April 25-27, 2005, the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate may designate members from their respective bodies to:
(1) participate in local forums on aging in connection with activities of the state conference;
(2) participate in selecting local delegates to attend the state conference.
(B) The Office on Aging, Office of the Lieutenant Governor, shall prepare and disseminate press releases stressing the importance of grassroots participation in local forums and copies provided to the General Assembly
(C) The Office on Aging, Office of the Lieutenant Governor, shall distribute information and recommendations generated from these conferences to members of the General Assembly for their use and consideration when developing future aging policy and legislation.
(D) The Office on Aging, Office of the Lieutenant Governor, shall provide information to members of the General Assembly on resource development activities and corporate efforts in the members' districts which are generating financial support for the White House Conference on Aging activities and scholarships for elderly delegates in need of financial assistance. Where possible, members shall encourage and promote the development of these activities and efforts.
SECTION 2. This joint resolution takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
