TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MRS. FRIEDA MITCHELL ON HER EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HER FOR GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, Mrs. Frieda Mitchell was born in Sheldon on June 20, 1925, the daughter of farming parents who worked odd jobs to earn enough money to allow their four children to attend private schools because there was no school bus transportation of African-American children to attend the segregated high school in Beaufort; and
Whereas, she attended Mather School, a private boarding school for girls. While at Mather School, Mrs. Mitchell studied business education and graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She furthered her education at Allen University; and
Whereas, observing the dismal living conditions and lack of political opportunities in the African-American community in Beaufort County, Mrs. Mitchell was determined to make a difference. She was instrumental in getting the first African-American elected to the Beaufort County Council, celebrated in 1968 when Mrs. Agnes Sherman and she were the first African-Americans elected to a school board in South Carolina, and played a major role in the desegregation of the public schools in Beaufort County; and
Whereas, throughout her career, Mrs. Mitchell has worked diligently to address the needs of the state's rural poor. Her efforts have resulted in solutions that have gained both national and international attention in the area of meeting the daycare, nutritional, and health care needs of South Carolina's poor; and
Whereas, she is the recipient of numerous awards that include the Marion Wright Edelman Award for service to children and the John D. Rockefeller III, Public Service Award; and
Whereas, Mrs. Mitchell will celebrate her eightieth birthday on June 20, 2005; and
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the General Assembly have been given this opportunity to share this occasion with her and her family. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mrs. Frieda Mitchell on her eightieth birthday and extend best wishes to her for good health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Frieda Mitchell.
