A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LEGENDARY TALENT OF JOE SAMPLE, AND TO WELCOME HIM TO THE PALMETTO STATE FOR HIS PERFORMANCE ON FEBRUARY 22, 2008, AT THE FIFTH ANNUAL LEGENDS OF JAZZ CONCERT SERIES FOR THE AUNTIE KAREN FOUNDATION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Joe Sample of contemporary jazz fame will perform in the capital city of our fine State to benefit a charitable organization, the Auntie Karen Foundation; and

Whereas, born and raised in Houston, Texas, Joe Sample began playing the piano at the young age of five, and as a teenager in the early 1950's, he formed the Jazz Crusaders with neighborhood friends; and

Whereas, this influential band would later become known simply as the Crusaders, one of the all-time leading jazz ensembles, and would pioneer the way for the sound of contemporary jazz; and

Whereas, Joe Sample's first solo record in 1973, Carmel, became a classic pop jazz album, and he has continued as a legendary figure in the field of contemporary jazz; and

Whereas, he and jazz vocalist Randy Crawford met thirty years ago when Joe played on her debut album Everything Must Change, and through the years, he has written numerous signature songs for her voice, such as Street Life, which launched her on a phenomenal vocal career; and

Whereas, now after thirty years of working together, they have collaborated to record a duet album, a wonderful musical heritage of soul, jazz, gospel, pop, and a bit of the blues, with Joe's piano playing and arrangements to envelop Randy's voice and capture the essence of each song; and

Whereas, the Auntie Karen Foundation based in South Carolina is bringing these two musicians to Columbia in keeping with its vision and mission to educate, enlighten, and empower through the arts; the foundation has also benefited a global market with an emphasis on reproducible community outreach programs; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly applaud the work of the Auntie Karen Foundation in bringing the talent of jazz legend Joe Sample and vocalist Randy Crawford to Columbia to perform. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the legendary talent of Joe Sample, and welcome him to the Palmetto State for his performance on February 22, 2008, at the fifth annual Legends Of Jazz Concert Series for the Auntie Karen Foundation.
