A SENATE RESOLUTION

MEMORIALIZING THE GOVERNOR TO REQUEST AN EXTENSION FROM THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY FOR THIS STATE'S COMPLIANCE WITH THE FEDERAL "REAL ID" REQUIREMENTS FOR SOUTH CAROLINA DRIVER'S LICENSES AND IDENTIFICATION CARDS.

Whereas, states not yet in compliance with the identification and other requirements of the United States Department of Homeland Security "REAL ID" regulations in the issuing of a driver's license or identification card have until March 31, 2008, to request an extension to achieve compliance; and

Whereas, as of May 11, 2008, without either "REAL ID" compliance or an extension request filed by March 31, 2008, South Carolina residents having a valid South Carolina driver's license or identification card will not be able to use that license or card as identification to board a commercial aircraft or enter a federal facility; and

Whereas, the additional documentation that will be required for those purposes is an unnecessary burden on South Carolinians that may be avoided if action is taken by this State to seek an extension in meeting REAL ID requirements. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, memorialize the Governor to request an extension from the United States Department of Homeland Security for this State's compliance with the federal "REAL ID" requirements for South Carolina driver's licenses and identification cards.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to His Excellency Marshall C. Sanford, Jr., Governor of the State of South Carolina, and the Honorable Marcia S. Adams, Director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
