A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING ACADEMIC MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL IN NORTH CHARLESTON FOR BEING SELECTED BY NEWSWEEK AS SEVENTH BEST HIGH SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY.

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School is centrally located in Charleston County, serving grades nine through twelve; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School is a relatively small high school with an enrollment of approximately five hundred students, providing them with a more personalized education and high school experience; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School uses a highly selective admissions process based on students' test scores and grades; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School's mission is to challenge each student, teacher, and parent with high expectations, and to provide a learning environment that thoroughly prepares students for college and develops self-esteem; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School uses a strong, rigorous curriculum that builds on students' knowledge and skillfully challenges the students to reach their scholarly potentials; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School encourages its students to be citizens of the world, acquiring a sense of global responsibility and respect for cultural diversity; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School has continued its scholastic dominance by ranking as Newsweek's seventh best public high school in the country; and

Whereas, Newsweek's ranking system is based on the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or Cambridge tests given at a school, divided by the number of seniors graduating in May; and

Whereas, no other lowcountry school was included in Newsweek's ranking of more than one thousand three hundred schools nationwide, and the next closest South Carolina school on the list was Eastside High School in Greenville at number three hundred forty-two; and

Whereas, Academic Magnet High School improved it's ranking on the magazine's list over the last two years when it was named the nation's eleventh and tenth best public high school in the nation. The school has steadily improved its score on Newsweek's challenge ranking system, going from 5.8 to 7.2 last year, and to 7.3 this year. The recognition is validation of the hard work by both the students and teachers; and

Whereas, U.S. News and World Report rates Academic Magnet High School the twenty-seventh best high school in the nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Academic Magnet High School for being selected by Newsweek as seventh best public high school in the country.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Academic Magnet High School.
