A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO REMEMBER THE LIFE OF WYMAN DOUGLAS NETTLES, FORMER MAYOR AND POSTMASTER OF RIDGELAND, AND TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE JASPER COUNTY COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate remember with profound appreciation the life of former mayor and postmaster of Ridgeland, Wyman Douglas Nettles, who served his community with dedication and passed away on January 19, 2008; and

Whereas, born on November 18, 1921, on the Hampton County side of Yemassee, he moved to Jasper County when he was five years old; and

Whereas, after graduation from Ridgeland High School in 1939, he worked as a distributor for Standard Oil Company and then for Sinclair Oil before he enlisted in the Armed Services in 1942, and was assigned to the Army Air Corps; and

Whereas, during World War II, Wyman Nettles served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater from May of 1942 until December of 1944; and

Whereas, on April 7, 1945, he married his beloved wife Florrie Catterton, and they were married for sixty-two years and reared two fine children, Wyman Nettles and Sharon Morse Ziomek, who blessed them with two adoring granddaughters; and

Whereas, when he returned to Ridgeland he began his career in the post office as a clerk in February 1946; and

Whereas, Mr. Nettles served briefly in the South Carolina National Guard before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1948 and was honorably discharged four years later. He returned to employment at the Ridgeland post office but maintained reserve status for two years, then enlisted in the South Carolina National Guard from 1954 to 1967 and again from 1973 until 1976 when he retired; and

Whereas, he worked his way up in the post office and retired in 1977 as the Ridgeland postmaster after twenty-seven years with the postal service; and

Whereas, in 1976, Wyman Nettles was elected to the Ridgeland Town Council, and in 1978 he was elected mayor of Ridgeland and served in that office for six years; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are deeply grateful for the many years of devoted service that Wyman Douglas Nettles gave to his country and to his community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, remember the life of Wyman Douglas Nettles, former mayor and postmaster of Ridgeland, and express their deepest appreciation for his service to the Jasper County community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Wyman Douglas Nettles.
